The Story of Narcissus

"Well.. enough about me!  How did you like my performance?"

Narcissus, according to Greek mythology, was a young man of great beauty. Despite his attractiveness, he cruelly scorned the many nymphs and maidens who loved him in vain. One such maiden, in her bitterness, prayed that Narcissus would learn what it was to suffer unrequited love, and her prayer was answered. One day, while hunting in the mountains, Narcissus came across a pool of clear water. Leaning to drink from it, he saw his own reflection, and believed that it was a spirit that lived in the pool; admiring the beauty of the face reflected back at him, Narcissus fell in love with himself. He bent to kiss the image, he reached to embrace it, but whenever he touched the water, the image would disappear. Heartbroken, Narcissus stayed by the pool weeping, until his beauty faded, and evntually he died from grief. Although he had spurned them in life, the nymphs were filled with grief at Narcissus' death, and as his spirit was carried across the river Styx, they prepared a funeral pyre. His body, however, was not to be found--only, in its place, a flower, purple within, and surrounded by white leaves," drooping over its reflection in the pool.
